QuickRef
Search EFW Reference | Browse Subject Headings | About This DatabaseAbout This Database
The Entomology, Fisheries & Wildlife Library's QuickRef service provides interactive searching of printed sources within this library's reference collection and of relevant subject related web sites. It became publicly available in January 2002. (Note: Reference books are also listed in the University library catalog, MNCAT.)General Search Tips
From the search screen you may enter a word, phrase, or portion of a word to search. Then select Keyword, Title, Author, or Subject from the drop down box to query the database. With the "Keyword" search use the standard Boolean "and" command to combine distinctive terms or QuickRef subjects, for example: hunting and statistics.
All searchable fields automatically truncate (truncation is also known as "wildcards"). For example, zoo for keyword, title or subject will return items matching zoology and zoos. Similarly, Anders for author will return Anders, Andersen, and Anderson. Therefore, to limit the number of results be as specific as possible. A more general term (or portion thereof) will increase the number of results.
Subjects include formats, for example: Abbreviations, Directories,
Encyclopedias, Illustrations, Line Drawings, Maps, Statistics, as well
as standard terms, for example: Birds, Endangered Species, Fisheries,
Life Cycle, Skulls, Wildlife Refuges.
Browse Subject Headings
Select a letter (A-Z) to display subject headings starting with that
letter. Click on the desired subject heading to see its related records.
All subject headings displayed have at least one source associated with
them. Most subjects are Library of Congress subject headings, also used
in MNCAT, but some specialized terms have been added to enhance the
database, for example: Field Guides, Groups of Animals, Line Drawings,
Red Lists.
Handling Search Results
At the bottom of the brief results page is a count of how many records were returned. All items in the brief display maybe be expanded by clicking "Long." Clicking on URLs on the records will connect directly to the selected site. For help locating reference books, please contact Entomology, Fisheries & Wildlife Library staff. If URL links are not working, a notice sent via the "Contact" button below would be appreciated.
